哲学の面白さは、追求するものではない？

早速、ある人に批判されました。
「哲学の面白さは、追求するものではない。面白さを追求しても面白くはならず、むしろ難しく苦しくなってしまう。」
と言うのです。確かにそうかもしれません。
とりあえず今年目指したいのは、哲学の面白さ、楽しさをうまく言葉にすることです。もちろん、世の中には、哲学が面白いから、哲学研究しているのではなくて、やらずおれないから哲学研究しているので、面白い、面白くないは、とりあえず関係ないのだ、という人もいるだろう。私も実はそのように思っているところがあるのですが、他方では、哲学研究は面白いとおもっており、その面白さを言葉にしたいと思うのです。

    僕は，哲学研究は「面白い」とおもっています．ここでの「面白い」がどういうことかというと，単に，知りたいことがあって，それを教えてくれる，ということです（答えがあるとは限りませんが）．知りたいことの内容は，例えば，「僕は自由に行動しているのか，それとも僕の行動はこれまでの歴史によって決定されているのかどうか」「数学についての知識は客観的なものかどうか」などです．オオアリクイの生態について知りたい人は動物学を学ぶ．宇宙の果てがどうなっているのか知りたい人は宇宙論を学ぶ，自由意志について知りたい人は哲学を学ぶ．どこの学部に行けば何が学べるかは歴史的地理的に決定されるのでしょうが，哲学研究をしている人は，哲学研究をすれば自分の興味関心について学ぶことが出来る，と判断しているのだろう，と憶測しています．哲学を他の学問と同じ位に据える特徴づけです．しかし， 知りたいことがある そして 知ろうとする この動機づけの流れを否定するのは難しいと思います．そして，好奇心を満たす活動が「面白い」か「面白くない」かといわれると，「好奇心を満たすことは面白い」と多くの人が判断すると思うのですが，どうでし

    面白い、面白くないという話題が出ていますが、それではこういう問いはどうでしょう。幸せな人と、不幸な人、どちらが哲学するのに適しているのか、どちらがより深く哲学を追求することができるのか。大雑把な議論になることを承知で言うと、私は明らかに不幸な人のほうが深い思索に至るのではないかと思います。そしてこの点が哲学と他の学問とでは大きく違っていると思うのです。

    入江先生、こんにちは。ご無沙汰しています。帰国日は3月20日になりました。 学部生のごく気楽な立場から言わせてもらえれば、哲学が人を不幸にしてしまうのも簡単なことだと思うのですが、それを十分斟酌した上でなお、人を幸せにする哲学があってもいいんじゃないかと最近思うのです。何が幸せで、何が不幸なのか、それも最近はよく分からないのですが。 あと、哲学研究はある種の人たちにとっては端的に面白い、と私も思います。これじゃあ、あまり答えになってないですかね…。

    人は、音楽にしろ絵画にしろ、経済にしろ金融にしろ、数学にしろ物理にしろ、追求することが大好きです。
    そして、難しさの向こうにシンプルな構造が存在している時、美しいと感動するのです。
    物理学者ファインマンは言いました。オイラーの公式は「宝石」かつ「数学においてもっとも特筆すべき公式」 だと。
    ソクラテスも、プラトンも、アリストテレスも美しいです。ウィトゲンシュタインは美しいです。ハイデッガーは美しいです。

    私も哲学研究者のはしくれです。強いられてこの道にすすんだわけではないので、個人的な諸事情をかんがみて、この道が一番面白そうだ、と判断したのでしょう。では、なぜ哲学は面白そうだ、とお考えたのか？哲学をよく知る前のことですから、いくつかの哲学的な文章を読んで、この先にはいろいろありそうだ、と推測したのでしょう。この道に入って大分たちますが、その推測は的中したか。この問いについては、とりあえず答えを濁しておきたいとおもいます。面白い部分もある、でもいいかもしれません。以前、あるところで、一般の学生さん向けの哲学入門の授業をした際、たぶん、ナーゲルの哲学入門書をテキストにしたとおもいますが、ひとりの受講者が、期末レポートに、哲学というのは非常に贅沢な学問ですね、という意味のことを書いてくれました。野菜をつくるわけでもないし、鉄道を走らせるわけでもないですから、たしかに高等遊民の活動という側面があります。(つづく）

    哲学の擁護のためには、いやそれだけではないよ、心を耕すことや社会改革のための理念を練り上げることも哲学はやるよ、と言わなくてはいけないでしょうが、通常実用価値はゼロに近いことを考えれば、哲学が最も贅沢な学問であることは間違いないと思います。過去はどこにあるのか、自由意思は本当に存在するのか、神が存在するならなぜ悪が存在するのか、阿弥陀仏のがんばりをどう解釈したらよいのか、等はたしかにそれ自身面白い問題だと思います。ただ、解答が、またそのために論証がつねに面白いとはかぎりません。管理人様ご指摘のように、哲学の面白さは、主として問題の面白さにある、と言っていいのかもしれません。私としては、解答と論証も面白くする責務が、これらの問題にたずさわる遊民にはあるように思っています。簡単ではありませんが。
