最終講義を聴く

昨日、仏文学者K教授の最終講義を聴きました。K教授はそこで二つの文学作品の具体的な読解をおこないました。それは説得力のある解釈でしたが、そこには説得力以上のものがありました。その読解は、気づかなかった様々な出来事や語り方の連関を示して、作品の効果を明らかにしてくれるものでした。読解が、作品を構成するということの見本のような読解でした。しかも、その読解が彼独特の語り口と不可分であり、つまり作品の語りと読解者の語りが融合して作品世界を作り上げるというようなものでした。作品から彼の読解を区別するとき、その読解そのものが物語的になります。文学作品の読解は、作品の物語世界を膨らませますが、その読解を作品からあえて分けると、その読解そのものが物語的になるのです。（同じ理由で、歴史研究は歴史的になり、思想研究は思想的になるのかもしれません。）

文学作品は、机の上のコップのように人間の解釈から独立に存在するものではありません。それはすでに解釈されたものです。文学作品の解釈は、解釈の解釈という二重の解釈になります。
では、この二つの解釈は、対象言語とメタ言語のような関係になるのでしょうか。
読解者が作品の中に登場する「銀貨」と「銀時計」の類似関係がもつ力を指摘するとき、その力は、銀時計を目の前にしている少年の心の中ではたらく力になるのです。作品の中には、「類似」という言葉は登場しません。それは、作品の中で語られていない関係です。しかし、作品世界の中に成立している関係です。つまり、作品世界というものがあって、それについて作品が語っており、読解もまたその作品世界について語っているのです。作品と読解は、作品世界に対する別の語り方なのです。しかし、他方で、読解が作品世界でなく、作品の語りについて語ることもあるでしょう。このように作品と解釈の関係は、ある場合には、対象言語とメタ言語の関係にあり、他の場合にはそうではありません。したがって全体としては、対象言語とメタ言語の関係だとはいえません。そこにはもう少し込み入った関係があります。
