01 定義の試み

　　　９月初旬の白樺湖です。２７年ぶりに訪れました。
曇りがちの天気でしたが、気持ちの良い朝でした。

哲学の定義を以下に試みてみました。
ご批判をお願いします。

■哲学の定義１：哲学とは、全ての知識の体系ないし、そのような体系の基礎となるそのような体系の基礎的な部分体系（あるいは、このような体系を追究すること）
ギリシア以来の多くの哲学者は、このような哲学体系が可能だと考えており、それを実現しないまでも、求めてきた。おそらくその最後の試みになるが、ドイツ観念論であろう。彼らは、知識が体系となること、哲学がその体系の基礎となる体系であることを主張していた。
しかし、もし知の基礎付けが不可能であれば、このような試みは、不可能な試み、あるいは不合理な試みである。ところで、現代では知の基礎付けは不可能であると考える哲学者がおおい。したがって、このような哲学の定義は、きわめて評判が悪い。
では、「知の基礎付けが可能であるか不可能であるか」について、最終的な決着はついているのだろうか。私は、まだ決着がついていないとおもう。なぜなら、知の基礎付けが不可能になるとしたら、どのような知も採用しない懐疑主義をとるか、ある知を採用するがしかしその可謬性をみとめるという可謬主義かのいずれかになるだろう。そして、この両者に対しては、＜それらは、自己自身の主張に適用されるときに自己矛盾するので、自己論駁的である＞という批判があるからである。この批判には、反論もあり、最終的な決着はまだついていないのではないかと思う。
もし、「知の基礎付けは、可能か不可能か」という問題に、最終的な決着がついていないとすれば、この問題に決着を付けようとする試みとして、哲学を定義することもできるだろう。

■哲学の定義２：哲学とは「知の基礎付けは、可能か不可能か」という問に答えようとする試みである。

これは、哲学の最も重要な課題であるが、それ以外にも哲学の課題があるとすれば、哲学は、より包括的に次のように定義することが出来るだろう。

■哲学の定義３：哲学とは、問題を立て、その答えを探求することである。哲学とは、最も基礎となる知であろうとそれ以外の知であろうと、（基礎付けが可能であることが確認されない限り）、知や理論のことではない。
この定義において、探求の対象となる「問題」は何でもよいはずはない。それは、主としていわゆる「哲学的問題」である。しかし、哲学の定義の中で、「哲学的」の語の使用を前提すると、循環説明になる。したがって、哲学が探求する問題が、どのような問題であるのかを、定義する必要がある。
日常生活や諸科学の研究において立てられている問題を、今仮に「通常問題」と呼ぶことにしよう。そうすると、「哲学とは、通常問題が前提している命題の根拠を問うこと、または通常問題をより一般化して問うことである」といえるのではないだろうか。日常的な表現をすれば、「哲学とは、様々な事柄について、通常よりも「より深く」「より広く」考えることである」となる。通常問題を、より深く、より広く、考えようとすると、それはいわゆる「哲学的問題」に行き着くのである。

■哲学の定義４：哲学の課題は、哲学的な問題が擬似問題であることを示すことである。
定義３に対しては、ウィトゲンシュタインならば反対して、このように言うだろう。彼は哲学的な問題が擬似問題であり、それを解消することが哲学の課題であると考える。「言葉の使用について明確な展望を持たない」（『探求』§122）から、誤って哲学的問題が生じるのである。哲学は、理論ではなくて、言語批判の活動なのである。「哲学における君の目的は何か。――ハエにハエとり壷から脱出する道を示してやることである。」（『探求』§309）（クリプキもまた、理論というものは常に間違っていると考えていたので、彼にとっても哲学の仕事は、理論を提示することではなくて、言語批判の活動なのだろう。）
では、ウィトゲンシュタインがいう「哲学的問題」とは何だろうか。『論考』では、哲学的問題とは、科学的命題ではない形而上学的命題に関わる問題である。『探求』では、科学的命題と形而上学的命題の区別が無効になるので、哲学的問題についての別の説明が考えられているだろう。
ウィトゲンシュタインが、哲学的問題は擬似問題であるという理由は何なのか？例を挙げて説明しよう。我々の言語の正しい用法は、すべて日常的な使用法である。しかし、日常的な使用法で語られた通常問題の前提について、日常では問わないような問いを問うとき、その問の言語使用は、通常の言語使用にはないような使用になる。たとえば、知の根拠を遡ると根拠付けられていない信念にたどり着くが、その信念については、通常の意味で「真」「偽」を語ることが出来ない、とウィトゲンシュタインはいう（『確実性について』）。それにもかかわらず、どこまでも「真」「偽」を尋ねようとするとき、そこに擬似問題が生じるのであろう。
これに対して、オックスフォード日常言語学派といわれるオースティンやライルは、日常言語の分析が哲学的な問題の解決に役立つと考えていた。「哲学的問題は、有意味な問題であるか、擬似問題であるか」という問題には、決着がついていない。そして、この問題もまた哲学的問題のひとつである。
この問いを、さらに普遍化して言い換えると次のようになる。「ある問をより深くより広く問うとは、どういうことであり、それが可能であるための条件は何か？」
ウィトゲンシュタインが言うように、確かに哲学的問題の中には、擬似問題でしかないものもあるだろう。しかし、全ての哲学的問題が擬似問題であるとはいえないのではないか、少なくともこれは探求されるべき哲学的問題のひとつである。
したがって、私は、定義４を採用せず、定義３を採用しよう。

    哲学的問題を突き詰めてゆくと、用語の定義にたどり着きますが、
    これに対しては、私は物理学が採っている方法しかないと思っています。
    その方法というのは「無定義概念」から出発するという方法です。
    物理学に於いても当初は、日常的に使用されている定義するまでもない用語で定義することを試みられたが、「時間」とか「空間」とかその他五つの語は定義が困難と判断されて、「無定義概念」とされています。
    哲学に於いても時間は掛かると思いますが、いずれはそういう形になるものと思っています。

    はじめまして。
    私も「定義３」派です。
    イヤフォンがこわれた、新しいイヤフォンは何がいいだろうか、おいしい蕎麦を食べたい、どの店に行こうか、いま何時だろう、などの身の回りの問題を「日常的問題」と呼びます。
    これに対し、イやフォンがよいとは何だろう、蕎麦がおいしいとはどういうことだろう、時間って一体何だろう、過去はどこにあるのだろう、そもそもものや事柄があるとはどいうことだろう、私はどこから来たのだろう、私は誰だろう、本当に私は私なのだろうか、私はどうあるべきなのだろう、そもそも「べきである」の根拠はどこにあるのだろう、・・・といったわれわれの活動の周辺ないし限界付近で発生する問題を「哲学的問題」と呼びます。

    われわれの発動はたえず拡大・深化していますが、最前線が伸びるだけで、限界はなくなることはないでしょうから、「哲学的問題」は消滅することはありません。なるなることがないのは、「日常的問題」も同じです。
    哲学とは「哲学的問題」を解こうとする活動である、
    ということになります。
    「限界」を明確に定義していませんから、日常的問題と哲学的問題の
    境界はファジーですが、ファジーでかまわないと思います。
    「限界」をゆるやかにとれば、多くの問題が哲学的問題になります。
    私は「ゆるやかにとる」派です。
    この場合、科学、技術、文学、映画、宗教等と「哲学」は接点を多くもつことになります。
    この「哲学」観は案外受け入れてもらいやすいのではないか、と思っています。
    以上、興味深い御考察に導かれて、勝手なことを書かせていただきました。
