ここまでの議論で前提しておきながら、それを断っていなかったことがありました。それは、決定論と自由の非両立説をとるということです。非両立説というのは、物理的な決定論と人間の意志の自由が両立しないと考えるということです。物理的な決定論と人間の意志の自由の両立論を主張する人もいますが、この書庫では、それが両立しないということを前提しています。しかも、物理主義が正しいということを前提しています。しかも、社会のほとんどの人がそのような非両立主義と物理主義を受け入れており、それが社会の常識になっているという世界（「物理主義の世界」）に住んでいるということを前提しています。
 
私は、非両立論と物理主義をここで論証しようとしているのではありませんし、それらが正しいだろうと予想しているのでもありません。この書庫での課題は、仮にその二つを社会が受けいれた「物理主義の世界」というものがあるとすると、その中で法律や道徳が可能かどうか、可能であるとすればどのようなものとして可能か、ということを考えてみることです。
 
これまで考えてきたところでは、物理主義の世界でも、計画的に行為する合理的な行為者の存在を想像することはどうやら可能だ、ということでした。では、道徳や法律や可能なのでしょうか。
これまでの議論では、次の3つを区別してきました。
（１）計画的に行為する合理的な行為者であること
（２）道徳や法律が可能であること
（３）人間が自由であること
（３）を認めないのが、この書庫での前提でした。（１）は可能である。（２）が残る問題です。
 
さて、以上の議論と関係しておりながら、以上の議論に対する根本的な批判になっているのが、ストローソンの論文「自由と怒り」です。ストローソンは、そもそもこの書庫の前提である決定論を「理解できない」、あるいは想像できない、というのです。しかし、それは決定論がまちがいであるというのではありません。そのような哲学者はたくさんいるでしょう。そして彼らとの論争は、この書庫の前提が脇に置いてきたことです。
しかし、ストローソンが決定論を「理解できない」というのは、決定論が間違っているというのではないのです。＜人間にはそれをまともに考えることができない＞、と言えばよいのかもしれません。このような立場は、我々の書庫での前提を脅かします。つまり、我々は決定論の真偽は別にして、それを理解し、想像し、仮定することはできると考えているからです。
 
そこで、ストローソンの論文「自由と怒り」（法野谷俊哉訳）（門脇俊介＋野矢茂樹、編・監修『自由と行為の哲学』春秋社）の主張を検討したいと思います。
ストローソンは、「自由と怒り」において、まず悲観論者と楽観論者の論争を成立しています。悲観論者は、決定論をみとめ、それが自由と両立しないと考え、しかもそこでは道徳が成立しないと考えます。楽観論者は、決定論を認めるが、それは自由と両立し、道徳が成立すると考えます。
ストローソンの整理では、悲観論者は、自由も道徳も認めないが、楽観論者は、自由も道徳も可能だと考える。私がこの書庫で問題にしたいのは何度も繰り返しますが、自由を認めないで、法や道徳が成立する余地はないのだろうか、と言うことです。
 
さて、ストローソン自身は、「決定論という命題の内容が正確にわかっていない」（訳p.49）という立場をとります。彼は、人間には、決定論が正しいものとして受け入れて生活することはできないと考えます。その意味で、決定論を正確には分かっていないというのです。
 
この主張について、次に検討したいと思います。
