　売買とは、貨幣と商品との交換の契約です。この売買契約は、他の契約と同様に、両者が自由に契約できることを前提しています。自由な契約でなければ、それは契約とは言えないでしょう。自由は、「契約」という概念の中に含まれています。
　お金や商品を自由に売買できるためには、それらを自由に処分できるものとして所有していることが必要です。自由に処分できるためには、その対象は、他の対象から分離可能でなければなりません。例えば、ある人Aが木の根の部分を所有しており、Bがその幹の部分を所有しており、Cが枝と葉の部分を所有しているとしましょう。このとき、Aは根の部分を勝手に処分できるとすると、Aの自由な行為が、他者の所有物である幹や枝の部分にも大きな影響を与えることになります。したがって、Aが木の根の部分だけを所有するということは、そもそもあまり考えられません。たとえば、その木全体の元の所収者Dがいるとしましょう。彼は、根の部分だけをAに売ったりはしないでしょう。なぜなら、根の部分をAに売ったときに、Aがその根の部分を運び出そうとすると、所有者Dは、幹の部分や枝の部分を枯らしてしまうことになるからです（『ベニスの商人』も似た話です）。そのように考えると、Aが根の部分だけの所有権をもつようになるということは考えにくいことです。しかし、Dがその木全体を掘り出したあと、それを売ろうとして、根の部分と幹の部分と枝の部分を別々に売ることはありうることです。
　ある対象が商品になるということは、他の対象から分割可能だと見なされるということです。たとえば、労働者が、自分の労働力を商品として売るとき、あるいは自分の８時間の労働を商品として売るとき、彼のその労働力ないし８時間の労働は、彼の他の能力ないし他の時間から、分割可能だと見なされています。
　商品を売る者は、自由な契約によってそれを行うのですが、それは自分の所有物の一部を自由に分割できることを前提しています。彼の所有物は、世界から分割可能なものとして、彼の所有物になっているのですが、彼がそれを自由に売れるとすれば、それは彼がそれを自由に分割できるということです。
　様々なものが商品となることによって、様々なものの使用価値の質的な差異は無視され、貨幣で交換価値が表現される等質なものとなります。しかも、それらは、自由につまり任意に分割可能なものとなります。近代に登場する自然科学が想定する均質な時間空間は、市場社会における商品の均質性および分割可能性と深い関係がありそうです。(マルクスか既にどこかで言っているのかもしれません。）
