哲学とは、通常よりも、より広くより深く考えることである。また、哲学は、経験を超えた問題に答える形而上学である。このような哲学が、重要であることは言うまでもないだろう。しかし、哲学の知としての、様々な知や学問との比較における重要性は、必ずしも、役立つということとは結びつかない。なぜなら、形而上学の問題は、経験によって答えられず、言い換えると、経験に影響を与えないからである。
しかし今年の課題は、哲学の重要性でも、哲学の有用性でもなく、哲学の楽しさ、面白さである。哲学の楽しさは、通常よりも、より広く深く考えることの楽しさ、ないし、経験を超えた問題を考えることの楽しさである。では、それがなぜ面白いのだろうか。
我々は、哲学の問いの面白さ、哲学の答えの面白さ、哲学の論証の面白さを区別できる。
哲学問いは、常識を疑うところに、一つの面白さがある。
哲学の答えは、折衷的な常識を否定して、極端な主張をすることに面白さがある。
哲学の論証の面白さは、常識の批判と首尾一貫した主張の論証にある。
