ここでは、人生論の第一問題「死に対してどのような態度をとるべきか」について考えます。
「生きたい」という意図と、「人間は死ぬ」という事実の矛盾（？）から、「死に対してどのような態度をとるべきか」という問いが生まれのだと思われます。少なくとも、このどちらか、あるいは両方が成立しないとき、上の問いは生じないでしょう。
さて、「生きたい」という欲望には、二種類あることがわかりました。一つは心的ないし身体的な状態の記述としての「私は生きたい」です。もう一つは、意図表明としての「私は生きたい」という発話です。後者は社会的な欲望だといえそうです。
「私は生きたい」が事実の記述であるのなら、「人間は死ぬ」と矛盾しません。これらは、事実として、あるいは事実の記述としては、矛盾していないからです。
「私は生きたい」が意図であるときに、「人間は死ぬ」と矛盾する（？）のです。（この矛盾については、いずれ、もう少し詳しく説明することにします。）
もし「私は生きたい」が社会的な欲望であるならば、それと矛盾する「人間は死ぬ」の方も、自然的な死でなく社会的な死、自然的な事実ではなく社会的な事実なのではないでしょうか？ では、社会的な死とは何でしょうか？
