彼の書物、『ウォールデン-森の生活』 (Walden: or, the Life in the Wood,1854年)
のタイトルになっている池です。周りを一周しておそらく2キロくらいだろうとおもいます。
写真のような雪の日に、周りを一周していて、危うく池に落ちるところでした。
一箇所とても危険なところがあります。
ソローは池のほとりの上の写真のところに、小さな小屋を作って、2年ほど一人で暮らしました。
といっても、コンコードの町まで歩いて一時間ほどなので、時々は町に買出しに行って
いたのではないかと思います。
この横に立っていた立て札に彼の文章が書いてありました。
「私は森へ向かった。それは、自由に生き、人生の本質的な事実だけに向き合うことを望んだからだ。」（さて、このあとの部分をどう訳したものでしょうか。もしわかる方がおられましたら、教えてください。）
池の周りには、森が広がっています。
アメリカの自然保護運動の先駆者といわれていますが、
『市民政府への反抗（市民的不服従）』 ("Resistance to Civil Government",1849年
というような本もあって、これもまた重要です。
