アダムソンは、『乳児のコミュニケーション発達』の第五章「対人的関わり」で、彼が「第二期：対人的関わり（interpersonal engagement）の時期」（生後２ヶ月頃～生後５～６ヶ月頃）とよぶ時期について詳しく報告しています。
この時期の発達上の特徴は、アイコンタクト、社会的微笑、クーイングのようです。
・アイコンタクト：「乳児はパートナーの目をしっかり見ることが出来るようになり、非言語的コミュニケーションを組織化するのにもっとも有効な相互の見つめ合いの瞬間を持つことが可能になる」114
社会的微笑：新生児の内発的微笑は、二ヶ月ごろに外発的な社会的微笑になる。
クーイング：発生のレパートリーが非常に多くなる。116
他に興味深い指摘としては、以下のような指摘がありました。
・二ヶ月ごろ、赤ちゃんの覚醒敏活活動期は、覚醒時間のほぼ８０％を占めるようになる。
・乳児は一度に二つことができるようになる。たとえば、乳児はリズミカルに腕を振りながら、他者に微笑することが出来るようになる。
・単に応答するだけでなく、自分から動作を開始するようになる。
おそらく、これらのことがもっと深いレベルでの変化なのでしょう。
